About:

Who we are...

The studio is run by myself, Emily. All correspondences and printed work will be completed by me directly - no bots, computers, outsourced employees, just one real person. I have built the studio from the ground up, focusing on delivering the best quality service and level of printing performance that I can.

My background is in Graphic Design. I graduated from the London College of Communication (UAL) in Graphic & Media Design, specialising in Typography back in 2013, then later completed my Masters degree in Fashion Graphics from the Manchester School Of Art in 2018 - it was here that I really developed my passion for process, in particular Screen Printing.

After becoming self-employed in 2019 and officially starting the SANS brand (which was supposed to be the start of my street-wear career...ha!), it turned out that I was able to support myself not through printing and selling my own designs, but printing commissions for others! It ended up becoming a steep learning curve, being a self-taught commercial screen printer is really not an easy or quick task, but the skills and practises I learned though jumping in head first have been invaluable.

A disciplined work ethic, attention to detail, specialist knowledge of technique, skills, process and materials, along with a lot of patience, are all things I have learned and perfected along my journey to become the printer and studio owner I am today. I bring this to each client I work with, and every single t-shirt or tote bag I print.

What is Screen Printing?

It sounds complicated, but it's actually quite a straight forward process...

Screen printing is a traditional, hands-on method of printing garments that has been refined over decades. Each colour in a design is applied individually by pushing ink through a finely prepared mesh screen onto the fabric. This isn’t an automated or instant process - every stage is set up, checked, and printed by hand.

The process begins with your digital design. That artwork is separated into individual colours, as each colour requires its own screen. A screen is a rigid frame fitted with a fine mesh, which is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. Your design is then exposed onto the screen, hardening the emulsion everywhere except where ink needs to pass through. Once washed out, the screen becomes a precise stencil of the design.

During printing, the garment is positioned by hand, ink is placed onto the screen, and a squeegee is used to push the ink through the open areas of the mesh and into the fabric. Each colour is printed in turn, carefully aligned, then cured so the ink fully bonds with the fibres of the garment.

This preparation is why screen printing has an initial setup cost - time, materials, and skill go into creating screens before printing even begins. However, those setup costs are spread across the print run, meaning the higher the quantity, the lower the unit cost. We also keep your designs and screens on file for re-ordering, saving you money for future orders.

Screen printing produces prints that wear in rather than wear out. It’s a craft-led process that favours quality, durability, and creates garments made to be worn and kept — a considered alternative to fast, disposable fashion.
